The Writer's Chronicle

In November 2013, I was approached by the Association of Writers & Writing Programs to do a commissioned cover and half page illustration for their Writer's Chronicle magazine, February issue. I was given two essays to base my work off of: "The Quick and the Dead: An Energy Crisis in Poetry" by Charles Harper Webb, and "Mess and Mayhem: A Brief History of Collaborative Writing" by Ravi Shankar.

The cover of the magazine is based off of Webb's essay, focusing on demonstrating the full potential of energy in poetry. Webb described energy in poetry as a charge in the poet’s brain, transferred to the reader as a breath of life. I decided to represent a poet with unlimited imagination, surrounded by visuals pulled from the essay.

For the inside half-page illustration, following the essay "Mess and Mayhem: A Brief History of Collaborative Writing", I wanted to create an idea of collaboration in a dreamscape. Shapes and objects emerge from the illustrated duo's minds, representing their shared thoughts. These dream items are all references taken from Shankar’s essay.
